Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain involving irritation of the plantar fascia.

Symptoms

  • Sharp heel pain, especially with first steps
  • Pain after periods of rest
  • Tightness in the foot or calf

Diagnosis

  • We perform a comprehensive assessment including your medical history, symptoms, and activity levels.
  • Physical examination of the foot and ankle, including assessment of joint movement, muscle strength, lower limb alignment, walking pattern (gait), pain location, tissue tenderness, and foot mechanics.
  • Where clinically indicated, imaging such as ultrasound or X-ray may be recommended to assist in diagnosis.

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Overuse or prolonged standing
  • Stress or overload
  • Tight calf muscles
  • Flat feet or high arches
  • Poor footwear support
  • Increased body weight
  • Sudden increase in activity levels

  • Manual therapies including mobilisation & manipulation techniques, dry needling, massage, and shockwave therapy
  • Injection therapies

  • Footwear advice
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises
