Ingrown Toenails

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, leading to inflammation, pain, and sometimes infection.

Symptoms

  • Pain and tenderness along the nail border
  • Redness, swelling, or discharge
  • Difficulty wearing shoes

Diagnosis

Clinical examination of the nail, surrounding tissue, and assessment for infection or recurring issues.

Common Causes and Risk Factors

  • Improper nail trimming – cutting nails too short or rounding the edges
  • Tight or ill-fitting footwear that places pressure on the toes
  • Toe injuries or trauma – e.g. stubbing the toe or repetitive pressure
  • Naturally curved or thick nails – genetics
  • Excessive sweating leading to softer skin around the nail
  • Poor foot hygiene
  • Repetitive activities such as running or sports
  • Previous history of ingrown toenails (higher risk of recurrence)

Treatment

Conservative nail care, infection management, or minor nail procedures to remove the affected portion and prevent recurrence.
